We Celebrated our Second Marriage….To Each Other

Nancy and Terry Nancy and Terry, together again

He was my high-school sweetheart, my first husband for only five years and now, almost three decades later, my groom once again. After 27 long years  apart, we were taking our first cruise together, a second-chance honeymoon. We were in our 50s, celebrating a renewed commitment to each other.

Terry and I boarded Star Princess bound for the Eastern Caribbean, excited, this time, to truly start our lives together. On the first night we arrived at our assigned table for dinner, a little apprehensive about who we were about to meet.

We found already seated there an older couple in their 70s along with a much younger one in their 20s. I wondered about the age range and our compatibility, as one couple could have been our parents and the other our children. After chatting for just a few minutes, we were startled to discover that we all shared the wedding date of October 18th. The older couple was on a 50th anniversary cruise and the younger couple, like us, had just gotten married. We felt like three generations of the same family, so the stories started to flow easily and comfortably. Terry and I didn’t hesitate to share our story of first love followed by our tale of love the second time around.

We were so young when we first married in 1963. I was only 18 and he was 20. Within a few years Terry was called to service in Vietnam and after two tours of duty, only months apart, he returned feeling the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Back then, we didn’t know what it was or how to treat it, and the era of marriage therapy wouldn’t come until later in the 1970s. So without the skills, we parted ways and decided that I should raise our daughter, Janean.

Over the years, as Terry worked to overcome the effects of PTSD, he chose to not be a part of our lives. But ironically, we were living parallel lives, remarrying, having children, divorcing and living alone for roughly the same periods of time. It took Janean making us grandparents to put us in the same room  and in one another’s lives again.

And what joy!  Within months we were engaged and we decided to marry on the same day as our first marriage, October 18th, 1996 – both times falling on a Friday.

Our story enthralled our tablemates and brought the “you should be on “Oprah” comments we later got used to hearing. We felt it was almost too personal for so many eyes. But with our tablemates and newfound friends, with whom we shared such a special date, our story came tumbling out.

How we came to be seated together, I’ll never know. But I suspect that the Princess ”table-assignment fairy” had taken note and placed us together. Now, 14 cruises later we are still celebrating love the second time around, marking each passing anniversary with a Princess cruise.

Nancy resides in Trabuco Canyon, Calif. and has enjoyed 14 Princess cruises with Terry.

Great, inspirational story. Dorothy and I will be going on the Crown Princess Jan. 14. It will be our 20th cruise on your line. Always had a great time on your class line. (It rhymes!) Plan to include the entire family on our 60th anniversary in 2013 (just like we did in 2003).

The Passengers Services Act of 1886 is commonly known as the Jones Act. It is an anqeiuattd law that should be repealed for the benefit of U.S cruisers and the cruise industry.I have traveled several times on repositioning cruises where a ship relocates across the Atlantic or Pacific. These are my favorite types of cruises as they include several days at sea, giving me time to enjoy the ship itself. And, they are usually 2 for 1′s.

Valerie, Your story made me believe in love again…with so much stress in our everyday life, we forget the simple pleasure of loving someone and having that love in return is the greatest gift of all. My question is to Terry……how can I convince my husband Bob that there are things for ‘blokes’ to do on a cruise please? I think it would help us to rekindle a lot of what we have lost but he always says>>>’There’s nothing for blokes to do!”

Oh my gosh, there is so much to do. Has he ever looked at a Princess Patter for any day of any cruise. There is just no way a person could begin to do everything the enjoy. Also, the shore excursions are wonderful! Check on a 7 day cruise and see how many ports you will visit and all the things that are offered in shore excursions. For us, cruises provide a change for new sights and new adventures, and on the days at sea if we not take part in one of the many activities it gives us a time to relax, read a book, go to the movies, play some bingo, gamble in the casino (I love the penny slots…and they pay really well), go to great lectures, get a massage, and of course, partake of the amazing food in the Horizon Court. I cannot imagine he would not enjoy himself. He really needs to give it a try. :) It is also great for rekindling a relationship. When we are on a cruise, we are both continually smiling, so that tells you something about how much enjoyment it brings to both of us.

What a wonderful story!!! We have been on two Princess cruises—one to Alaska, and one to the Caribbean. My husband is not a big traveller and he likes the fact, that you fly to your destination, get on the ship and stay there—no car travelling from place to place, packing and unpacking all the time at hotels. Of course you have the option of seeing the destinations you dock at or just enjoy the cruise experience. Great way to get him to travel!!!

Cruising is without a doubt the best way to travel. Everything in one place, and such luxury! Terry and I love that during the cruise we never have to really think about what to do. There is so much available at any hour of the day (or night) and the best part is that we paid for almost all of it in advance. So nice not to have BIG bills waiting for us when we get home. If you like Hawaii, and being on the ocean, The 14-day Hawaii cruise is marvelous! We usually go over Thanksgiving or right before or after Christmas, and the fares are amazing at that time of year. The most relaxing thing I have ever done. Give it a try. = )

          Hi Stephanie,

The cruise leaves out of Los Angeles. Your sail round trip…5 days on the ocean then one port per day for 5 days then 4 days on the ocean into Ensenada, MX for a partial day, and you arrive in LA the next morning. On the days at sea, they plan so many great things to do on the ship, and at that time of year the weather has always been conducive to spending time on deck also. I would love to do this cruise EVERY year! Have done it in mid October, over Thanksgiving, and right after Christmas over New Years. Wonderful every time!

I just booked a cruise for the california coastal on May 5th 2012 onboard the sapphire princess. This cruise will serve for many occasions for my wife and I. When we got married on June 26, 2011 we never got to go on a honeymoon as we had to pay for the wedding all ourselves and couldn’t afford it. We are going on this cruise for our honeymoon. Also we are going to be onboard for my 29th birthday. May 5th is my birthday and that is the day that the cruise leaves. Also we are going to be counting this as our one year anniversary seeing as how it is so close. The only thing that I wish I could of gotten is a better room then an Interior room to celebrate the occasion. So I am hoping that this will be the lucky time that we get upgraded. I want everything to be perfect for us. This is my 6th cruise and 6 is my lucky number so im hoping that all the stars will align and this cruise will be amazing. This will also be our first vacation together just the two of us. So it should be a trip to remember. Also I have heard that the Sapphire Princess will be going through a drydock renovation. Maybe one of the new suites has our name on it. (wishful thinking)

Wishing a wonderful “Delayed Honeymoon” for the two of you. Of all of the cruises we have taken, we have most often booked an inside cabin. The money we have saved by doing so has let us enjoy more cruises, and have more money to spend while on the cruise. Also, we find we are so seldom in the room that the inside cabin works just as well for us. Hoping also those stars will align for you and your bride, and that this cruise is one you will remember always.

My wife an I share a similar story. We went together in hIgh school and college in the 50′s and early 60′s and planned to get married but when I finished school the job moved me to another part of the country. In the 1960′s we didn’t have the communications mediums we have today so we drifted apart and went our seperate ways although I never stopped loving her or often wondering about her. Eighteen years later I was talking to a friend and found out she was divorced. I called her and we were married 6 months later. We have now been happily married for 29 years. If we had been married so many years ago it may not have lasted but life’s experiences gave us a greater appreciation for each other and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. We will be going on our 11th Princess cruise in April and I am so glad I have been able to experience my life with her.

My first marriage was also on October 18th and it also lasted only 5 years. Weird huh. But I’m glad that date turned out to be a happy one for you – what a wonderful story!
Fortunately, I haven’t seen my first husband for over 30 years, but with my new love, I will be enjoying my 9th cruise in February – and my 60th Birthday!
Thank you for sharing your story and many more happy years of sailing!

What a wonderful story. My husband and I went to high school, but did not talk again until 30 years later on a website. On our first date, we knew we were soulmates and were married six months later. The honeymoon was still not over 4 1/2 years later when we boarded Princess for our very first cruise. My husband almost backed out because he had not wanted to go on the cruise, but in the end he went. It was the greatest time we ever had together and he wanted me to book another cruise before we got off the ship. I am sorry to report that four months later, he passed away suddenly from a heart attack. I am so thankful to Princess cruises for making it the best time of our lives and would not take anything for the wonderful memories of that 7-day trip. I thank God that we got to take this cruise before he passed away

But life goes on and my new lady and I have been on Princess cruise twice and plan an eastern Carribean cruise over her 70th birthday on Feb 22, 2013. The best of luck, and health to you two.

Diana that is a amazing cruise. My family and I went in the beginning of may in 09 .. it was amazing but we were the first cruise after it had been in drydock so there were some things closed off and not fully completed yet. There was construction going on still. That was my wifes first cruise and it was a bad first experience for her to say the least.

We can top that…my husband and I met and began dating when I was 18 and he was 20. We got married three years later and have been together ever since. And it hasn’t been easy staying together through one son with ADHD and the other son with Down’s Syndrome. But we made it to our 40th anniversary last July and we are still best friends….that is a MIRACLE FOR OPRAH!!!
And, as far as I am concerned we both deserve combat medals for all we have been through together….at least a free cruise from our favorite cruiseline…Princess.

congratulations Nancy and Angie, and your spouses! My late husband and I took 104 cruises together, each one a special memory! But the last one, in November 2007, we celebrated 35 years together, and made precious memories. Who knew, just eight short months later, he would be leaving me, going to Heaven. Ironically, the nurse/counselor, who was in the room with us, as he took his last breath in my arms, had talked to me about his taking a “final” cruise, and likened his leaving me to sailing away from the pier, as I stood there crying, begging him not to go. The analigy was heartwarming, and I have envisioned that many times, taking comfort in knowing that when he left me, it was via a cruise, to Heaven and his family, knowing that he would be, and I should be accepting of that final cruise and destination….. Go make your memories, enjoy every precious moment of your cruises, and know that someday, one of you will have those memories in your minds and hearts, to sustain you! Nothing makes me smile more than thinking about my handsome husband, all dressed up in tux or formal wear, strutting his stuffor his loving approval of how his wife looked and dressed on our trips……God bless you all……

My husband and I have been on more than 16 cruises. We began with a New Year’s Cruise and have loved every cruise since the first one. Most of our cruises have been with Princess. We have taken our daughters on cruises when they were young and also when they were teenagers. We’ve cruised for brthdays, anniversaries, and holidays; however, we cruise because we love cruising. The itineraries are important to us, but we’ll cruise even if
the ports are those we’ve previously visited. Who doesn’t love to be pampered, to be treated like royalty, to be presented with exemplary service, to be wined and dined with a flair, to be offered great entertainent, and to be set ashore in exotic ports and foreign countries? We cruise because the cruise itself is the ultimate travel destination.

I have only traveled with Princess twice and I think it is my favourite ship line.. with R.C. second place.. cruising to me is how I would spend my whole life if I could… ship hopping. It gets to be addictive… I really love it so much to be able to do everything that is planned and found for you to do, all you have to do is show up… The food and entertainment is lovely that is my goal….. to sell everything up and ship hopping…. what a beautiful way to spend the last years.

This trip will bring some very dear friends back to Hawaii for the first time since their honeymoon there 41 years ago (we are travelling with a group of friends again who will celebrate with them of course). We will also celebrate 6 years since our engagement on the ship and my husband will celebrate his 55th birthday on the day we set sail. Needless to say romance will be in the air and lots of celebrating as we cruise for the 14 days.

We just celebrated our 30th anniversary and wished that we could have gone on a Carribean cruise aboard Princess but due to family obligations to a handicapped son and being so close to Christmas (Dec.23rd) it’s almost impossible for us to celebrate our anniversary period. My husband is disabled and has very limited mobility so we get the best bang for our buck cruising. I can push him around the ship and there is no where we can’t go. We always enjoy the entertainmemt and his favourite place to eat is Sabatini’s. We can get off the ship and take a tour of any island and the Princess staff is always most accomodating to us. Cruising enables us to see and do things that we ordinarily couldn’t do. We most enjoy seeing parts of the world we other wise could not see. The salt air and the wind thro our hair is the greatest. When we cruise we celebrate “Happy Everything”

    Nancy & Terry,

What a wonderful story! I totally believe in fate and ‘if it’s meant to be, it will be’. I am now with my first boyfriend (also Terry). We met a couple of months before our 16th birthdays (we share the same birthday and were actually born on the same night, in the same city, within hours of each other). He was my first love and we were originally together about a year and a half but broke up when we were 18. We each went on with our lives, he married and had a son; and I didn’t marry but spent 17 years with someone. Then, 27 years after we had first met, we were both single and he reconnected with me one day (completely out of the blue)! We are now very happy and living together. In March 2010, we sailed on the Emerald Princess to the Easter Caribbean (first cruise for both of us) and we definately plan to sail on Princess again. We have now been back together for 3 1/2 years and it was meant to be!

What a great story! It truly is heartwarming to know that love can bloom again. Love knows no season, and indeed, someone definitely had a hand in bringing you together and seating you with the right people for dinner. We are both widowed seniors and are going on our 5th cruise–third on Princess. Best of luck and happiness to you both!

My husband and I were married on Oct. 10, 1998 and were not able to go on the honeymoon we wanted too. It’s been a tough couple of years for us both and we are so looking forward to our cruise to the Carribean on the 14th of January. Neither one of us has been on a cruise in over 30 + years. Looking forward to just relaxing, spending time together and just getting away! It’s going to be the honeymoon we never had!

I married my guy 3 times! Mel was 19 1/2 and I was 17 1/2 with one year of high school to finish when we got married in 1956. I did graduate, 2 years later had our son, 2 years later our daughter and 7 years later twin girls. Celebrated our 25th anniversary with repeating our vows, and again on our 50th. Went on a Princess cruise to Alaska for our 53rd and in April we will sail from our hometown San Francisco to Hawaii to celebrate our 56th. Princess is the only way to go! Not sure yet where we will go for our 60th, God willing. Secret to our long marrage is, Mel always has the last words which are “yes, dear” and has shared this information with our 12 grandchildren. Anyone else going to Hawaii on the Star in April?

And everyone thinks we are so special because we were married, had two beautiful children and divorced 8 years later. We both remarried but my second husband died and Frank later got divorced. Sixteen years after our divorce we met again through our son and that “Old feeling” was still there. Have now been remarried for 33years but still celebrate our first anniversary date. We have made over 25 cruises with Princess and every year it has become a family tradition to take the Mexican Riviera cruise also. In this case, our distination is the ship, not the ports. We have done this for 7 years in order to celebrate the holidays together.

My husband was in the Royal Navy for 26 years so wasn’t interested in going to sea again, but after years of persuasion I finally got him aboard a Princess cruise to Mexico and we haven’t stopped cruising since. We have celebrated many special Birthdays and Anniversaries on board and hope to make it to our 60th Wedding Anniversary celebration with Princess. In February we take our longest cruise yet a month sailing around S.America.Unfortunately the ship was already full when we booked so we will be in an ‘inside’ cabin, but never mind we don’t spend much time in the cabin anyway. Thanks to Princess for making our vacations so easy and so much fun.

I’m well into my seventies, so I must remember not to be upset if I have to share a table with an old couple!! Only completed 4 cruises with Princess( They have all been on the Sun). A total of 289 days and they have all been great, but it would be good if a modern Princess could sail from Australia.

It was a treasure to have met both of the other couples we were paired with, and I would love to find all four of them at our table the next time we cruise.

Dear Nancy and Terry: Thank you soooo much for that wonderful story!! There really is a “Princess Table-Assignment Fairy” and a “Princess-Cupid Fairy” !! My Husband, Stephen and I first met on a cruise to the Caribbean in 1969, both with our Parents. I lived in Fresno, CA and Stephen lived in Encino, CA. I asked Stephen to be my escort at my “Debutante Ball” then, and he came to spend a very beautiful and platonic weekend with my Parents and me and was a perfect, handsome escort! But we did not stay in touch with each other after that. I went to college at UCSB and then moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil. When I returned to the States, about twenty-three years later, I found Stephen in the phone book and called him up in 1991. We have been married almost nineteen years now (and have never had a fight!!) Our honeymoon to Alaska was on the “Dawn Princess” and we have taken several (always Princess lines!!) cruises since then, but never heard your story. You two are to be congratulated, for sure!! Maybe we should start a club!:)

My husband and I have taken many cruises, both on Princess and other cruise lines. I have reached my elite status (more than 150 days) on Princess Cruise Lines. We are very impressed with the entire Princess experience starting with booking our cruise, boarding, our wonderful time on board (the crew, servers, activities, tours, entertainment, accommadations, etc,). The attitude of the crew is “thank you” for joining us and how can we help you. The Captain and crew have ALWAYS STRESSED SAFETY. We have ALWAYS HAD A SAFETY DRILL prior to leaving shore. There have also been many drills for the crew throughout our cruises. We are now planning our next Princess Cruise. We can’t say enough wonderful things about our experiences on Princess Cruises. Thank you for all our cherished memories.

Our story with Princess Cruises didn’t turn out so nice. We were taking our whole family to Alaska last summer, but my husband ended up in a hospital in Seattle with a massive bleeding colon. The rest of our family, kids and all, went on without us. The not so nice of Princess Cruise Lines, was that instead of giving our cabin, completely paid for of course, to someone in our family, they gave it away to someone else on board the ship! We got no reimbursement whatsoever! Not a nice experience at all.

I am so sorry to hear of your unfortunate situation. I hope your husband is doing well and that he will not have to deal with anything like that again. I was wondering if you called Princess and talked to them about the situation before your family boarded the cruise. I also agree that the cabin should have been given to one of your family since you were not able to continue on with the cruise. If you have not talked with them since that time, I would suggest you talk to them now, or even again if you were not properly heard the first time. At least ask that someone listen to had sad you were about the situation, and how badly it made you feel. Our experiences with Princess have always been so positive, and hopefully something can be done to help you feel more positively about Princess once again. Again, so sorry for your unfortunate experience.

Thank you Nancy. Yes we talked to everyone practically, even the president of the line. What made it so bad, they did know about it immediately and one of the supervisors even told our family that they could have the room and a few hours later reneged on it. We had been on several trips with them before and had good experiences, but this really turned our family and friends off Princess Cruises.

Absolutely love your story as it is very similar to mine and my husbands. We also got married at a very young age (I was 16, he 19) and divorced after almost 4 yrs. We each married other people and after not seeing or speaking to each other for 13 yrs, our lives were brought back together! We even planned on getting married on the same day as our first wedding (July 17) … BUT I was too impatient, we went on a cruise and on the second day out (April 13) we remarried each other in St. Lucia. We will be celebrating our 13 yr anniversary in April … on a cruise! We are so thankful for God’s blessings in our lives and that he allowed us to have another chance. But I always share the fact that we didn’t pick up where we left off 13 yrs prior, because that would have only ended in a disaster again. We instead did counseling together and have learned to build on our relationship by respecting, communicating and honoring one another. Thank you for sharing your story – beautiful!

When our lives came together once again, after 27 years, it was as if no time had passed at all. Being so much older, maturity had played a tremendous part in forgetting anything unpleasant from the past and only remembering the good that had once caused us to fall in love originally. We both knew immediately we were where we belonged and where we should have been all along. What a blessing for both you and your husband and for Terry and me, as well. <3

What an amazing story, my former wife and I celebrated our honeymoon on the Star princess as well, and it was in October of 2004, we did the western Carribean and loved every minute of it, and to top things off, we got to see our Beloved Boston Red Sox win their first world series in 89 years in our mini suite, I still have very fond memories of us hugging and crying that our team had won and I later found out my Niece Laura gave birth to her daughter Kailley that same night, so my memories of the Star Princess are to many to list here, the next time we saw “our” ship, they had a tragic fire on board in Ocho Rios and then we saw her in person in St. Marteen in 2007, and we both just looked at her in awe and reminisced about what we had experianced on that great ship, I hope someday that my former wife and I could remarry again someday and I would not hesitate to go back on “our” ship

What a wonderful story Nancy. Well today 21st Feb my beloved and I were to be onboard the Sea Princess and we were going to renew our vows on 23rd For the third time We were both so very excited and were counting down the weeks.ten days ago my husband was called for his much needed spinal surgery,he was so sure he’d still be able to go on the cruise but unfortunately he isnt able. So today I got a call from the Princess cruises asking if we were coming onboard, and I said I wish I was and told her the story. My husband,Bob has cancer and was given 1-5 years to live and he passed that date in July last year. He is such a romantic and asked if Id renew our vows on a cruise again as we’d done in 2009 on the Dawn Princess.Only two weeks ago we shopped for a “wedding” dress for me. As I write this the Sea Princess will be heading out under the Harbour Bridge in Sydney!!! Never mind we will do this again as soon as he is recovered.
