Surprising My Dad with His Dream Trip

Karen and her dad, Cliff, boarding Diamond Princess for their father/daughter trip of a lifetime.

My dad is a retired plumber, and one of his favorite things to do is to hang out at the local coffee shop, talking with his buddies.  They discuss just about everything including greatest trips, past and present. Dad has many vacations to share because when I was growing up, my family took car trips to see much of the United States and he and mom also traveled to Europe. But I knew he still had one special place on his travel bucket list. He wanted to go to Alaska and the nation’s “last frontier” brought out the wanderlust in him.

These thoughts came to me in a rush as I sat at my travel agent’s desk, frustrated because my South Africa vacation wasn’t coming together as I had hoped. What if my travel agent, Mary Hartmann, could book a couple of cabins on a cruise to Alaska instead? I could give dad that vacation he’d
dreamed about, along with a new story to share at the coffee shop.

I got mom’s blessing and put the trip on a 48-hour hold. When I went over to my parents’ house that night, I told dad he needed to clear his schedule. “What for?” he asked, confused. The pleasure it gave me to tell him I had two tickets for an Alaskan cruise is a memory I will relive forever. My dad, Cliff Seldal, a stoic Marine who served in Korea, had tears instantly fill his eyes as he replied, “I’m in!”

We boarded Diamond Princess with the same sense of exploration we had when we traveled as a family and stopped at every historical site and scenic overlook. We spent each night preparing the itinerary for the next day, circling the ship events that intrigued us most. Dad’s genuine excitement throughout our trip was like a kid experiencing Christmas for the first time and it seemed like every time I turned around, he was chatting with yet another new-found friend.

Three of our greatest memories are the excursions we took. Dad selected one in the gold rush town of Skagway, where we rode the famous White Pass railroad and bought hats and other mementos. In Juneau, we were thrilled to see some whales go by, their great flukes plunging in and out of the ocean. Our third stop was Ketchikan, where we visited the Totem Heritage Center and learned about the area’s logging past.

My dad and I have never spent nine days together, just the two of us, at any time in my life. Each morning, we’d start the day with a mile-long walk around the decks of the ship, and then remained busy with our list of activities which included food and ice-carving demonstrations, a tour of the ship’s vast kitchens, comedy shows and nature programs.  We even tracked down a Veteran’s get-together.

I am so grateful I got to appreciate him as an individual, a whole person and not just the father I used to butt heads with growing up or the busy granddad surrounded by grandkids. The amazing bonding experience we shared was certainly the most amazing part of this trip for me.

When dad told me he was ready to go again next year, it seemed as if a new vista in his life had opened up. Another thing had changed for him, too. At the neighborhood coffee shop, he had an Alaskan tale to trade. My brother, who took over the family plumbing business, witnessed his return and says he was absolutely giddy telling everyone about the trip. He’s since been privy to the numerous rehashings of our Alaska cruise.

I do have one more surprise for dad, a final cap to our big Alaskan adventure. He doesn’t know I’ve shared our story on this blog. I know he’ll enjoy telling his buddies about it and having another reason to boast about our father/daughter trip of a lifetime.

Karen resides in DeKalb, Illinois and has enjoyed one Princess cruise with her dad, Cliff.

I took several minutes of my day to enjoy your story of your Dad and you being together. One less thing on his bucket list and I hope he keeps adding to his list and you and him take more trips together.

        Hi
My name is Darlene Garland and I live in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland, Canada.
My husband and I were planning an Alaska Cruise and we finally booked it for May 20 – 27, 2012, but we have 8 other people joining from my family. We cannot wait. Is it really as great as everybody says. Also is it a cold cruise. Do we have to take winter clothing?

I’ve been on 3 Alaskan cruises…the very 1st was in May 2001…You will need to bring
layers of clothing. A good idea would be to have some light weight rain gear, too. You
are from Canada & much more use to “cold” weather than this Texas born & raised
girl…but, I am NOT very cold natured & had no problems…my husband, on the other
hand had to buy a jacket on the boat!

          Hi Darlene
We went to Alaska in Sept. 2011. Don’t hesitate to go. Absolutely beautiful. I would go again many times. Such pristine untouched beauty. We went with a group of 12 and everyone did their own thing in port and caught up with each other on the ship. White pass train ride is definitley a must do. And Glacier bay is fantasic.
          Enjoy your trip.

          Hello Darlene,

My name is Sylvie, I live in Ste-Thérèse, Province of Quebec, Canada. I have to practice my English, so I let you know my trip in Alaska, last year, same date than you. The weather was 15 degrees celcius, VERY VERY nice trip, it was my dream after a 5 years remission for a breast cancer. For the clothes, just bring layers – the best. Final coat doesn’t have to be so big and a comfortable pair of booth. I went by train with the White Pass & Yukon route, very nice. I wish you a very nice trip, be happy !
          Regards, Sylvie

            Dear Sylvie,
Good to hear you enjoyed your Canada Cruise…we had also booked a Canada Cruise 5 years ago but unfortunately we had to cancel at the last moment.
My hubby was diagnosed with Lymphoma and had to undergo 5 months of Chemo…so I understand completely that your cruise was to celebrate 5 years in remission…wonderful news!
My hubby is also doing well and next week we fly to LA to board a Panama Canal Cruise to celebrate his 5 years in remission…definately a cruise is a wonderful way to celebrate!
Best wishes to you Sylvie and continued good health…best wishes from us here in Australia!

            Regards Virginia

We went mid June and the weather was warm…generally the 60s and 70s during the day. But it can be cold, too. The best advice we got before leaving was to take clothes that can be layered and to take a good rain jacker and rain pants. We didn’t have much rain, but the few times we did, we appreciated being ready. And we used the raingear at times as just another layer for warmth! It can get quite cool in the wind on deck.

If you live in Newfoundland then you know what cold is. If you are going out of Vancouver the inside passage is calm and the weather can be beautiful in May. We usually have a late spring so a jacket is advisable because it can get cool, not cold! It also may rain, hence the rain forest. Thats how we get all the beautiful trees. You will love the Alaska cruise. You will love sailing with Princess. This is one trip you don’t want to miss, rain or shine. Get up early as the ship glides through the passages before it docks. This is as beautiful as it gets. This is the last frontier. When you see the glaciers, and the fiords, and everything around you, you will know.

I went on this Alaskan Cruise last August, it was wonderful. It does get cold as you sail up Tracy Fiord towards the Glacier so you will need to wrap up warm, I layered but had to buy a jacket with a hood for $19! We did the Dog Sled ride and the Slamon bake where a bear cub comes out as soon as the cook lights the BBQ, he can smell the Salmon, they have to chase him away as his Mother who weighs a few hundred pounds is waiting in the trees. Have a great time Darlene it will be everything you imagine it to be and more

Yes, Yes,Yes! It s definitely as great as everyone says. Actually, after taking my cruise in 2007, I ended up moving to Alaska in 2008 living in the interior for 3-1/2 years! Beware the “call of the wild” can get a hold of you like you wouldn’t believe! The weather can be cool and rainy that time of the year. Rain gear and layers are a must! Enjoy every minute of your trip!

Hi, Darlene, I went on the 13-day land-cruise tour (with 4 others) on the Coral Princess, starting in Fairbanks (land tour was first). It was a blast! Yes, you need to bring layers. I did fine with a camisole, medium-weight shirt, heavy sweater and rain jacket/windbreaker. Of course, the further north you are, the more you need. Don’t forget gloves and a knit cap! For the gloves, I used the kind with the missing finger tips so I could still take pictures easily (and I took a LOT of pictures!) Pay attention to the intercom narratives by the nature specialist!! Glacier Bay is absolutely breathtaking (watch for otters, and for grizzlies on the NW side), as is the White Pass train ride. In Juneau we took the tram up to the top of the mountain right behind Juneau and did a nice little hike to see the wildflowers and views. In Ketchikan, go to the “red light” district where all the “unlisted” shops are – they’re cheaper. There’s simply not enough time to do everything available at the ports, so choose carefully. It was the trip of a lifetime, and I hope to go back some day. Princess made everything so easy!! I thought I’d be exhausted from the daily schedule, but I wasn’t.

          Darlene,
Yes, take layered, but nothing heavy; they have no snow. We’ve been twice in latter May and found that time to be the best. It’s not rainy. They have rhubarb that is massive and lush green grass and foliage. I have incredible pictures of sun and snow capped mountains. I also have pictures of us basking in the sun, on deck, at 9:45 am. I live in central BC and we come back to snow. Hiking is T-shirt weather, and the long train ride in Skagway is very cold because of the altitude. As well, if the ship spends time in the Glacier, its cool because you’re amongst ice. Over-all, you will be warm. We’ve been there twice, and will go many more times.

I did much the same with my Dad after we lost Mom and he was in the dumps.. He was an old 101st Airborne guy who fought in WW-II, Europe and was lucky enough to have survived also.. Your Dad knows what I mean….. That trip changed his life as I am sure this trip brought great joy to your Dad.. Those are precious times we are lucky to have had….. You should get literature from your travel agent show the many things to see in Alaska to show your husband. We went in Spet. 2011 and the weather was fabulous. We wore T-shirts and jackets. He would absolutely love it. Very beautiful and majestic place to see. Definitely something to put on the bucket list.

My granddaughter said “I’m in Grammie!” 2 years and she graduates high school. We’re going to do this cruise for her graduation with Princess. I will probably do a lot of shore excursions as this will be one of those special times for just us, but like you, such a special memorable time. So Karen….where are you taking Mom for HER special cruise?? God Bless you for being such a wonderful daughter! You are truly a special person.

My wife and I took an Alaskan cruise and land tour four years ago and loved it so much we are going back this June. She gets cold very easily and was wary about a trip to AK. But we bought some good, high tech type polar fleece clothes and she never got cold the entire two weeks. It was amazing! I hope your husband reconsiders. Alaska is like nowhere else on earth and should be on everyone’s bucket list. It’s beauty is too much to describe. Hope you get to go!

Hi Sharon – I asked mom where I could take her and she reminded me that a few years ago we went to Charleston, SC with my sister-in-law, daughter-in-law and the 2 grandsons. After our weekend in Charleston mom spent 5 days with her sister in Georgia and our shared holiday remains a great memory for all of us. She was very happy dad was able to go on his dream vacation.
I am truly honored to have so many people comment on our trip and be so generous to share your own travel stories. The Princess cruise was an incredible way to travel – so relaxing, too much good food, great new friends, incredible scenery and completely stress free. If your granddaughter can’t go for some reason, call me and I’ll tell you “I’m in!”

How lovely…I remember years ago taking our eldest daughter to The Barrier Reef (we are Aussies) and our youngest daughter to Ayres Rock…hubby took our son to Tasmania…as I browse through our family photos I am reminded of how wonderful it was to have a special trip for each of our children! The kids are all grown up now and we have 5 beautiful Grandchildren…we are actually flying to LA next week to have a week in Disneyland with the Grandchildren which will bring more memories for us…maybe a bit of de ja vue…as we took our children to Disneyland many years ago!
After Disneyland we (hubby and I) are boarding a Panama Canal Cruise…we are all packed and excited to get going!

What an incredible gift for you and your Dad! Great stories for him and a lifelong memory of time spent with your Dad on a trip of a lifetime for you. My husband and I took the Alaska cruise almost 2 years ago and I will never forget it as long as I live. I had wanted to go to Alaska for 25 years and when my husband said “book the trip” I went into shock… We left from San Fransisco and for 10 wonderful days I had my husband all to myself. No phones, no computers, no clients calling all hours of the day and night, no kids, no grandkids…well grandkids I did miss…but it was heaven for me and I’ve never saw my husband so relaxed. He even said he would like to go again! He rarely likes to go someplace twice, always some where new on our trips, but he wants to go again and go on the the railroad trip and stay at the Wilderness Lodges. You won’t get any arguements out of me. I highly recommend the trip to everyone, its one you will never forget!

Sharon, I do hope you and your husband are able to take a cruisetour in the near future. My mother and I did in 2009 and we stayed at the Denali and McKinley Lodges. The same service you receive on the ship, you receive at the lodges. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, it is like they are old friends. The train ride from the ship to the lodges is spectacular. When we were on the tour of our cruisetour, we were able to see Denali every day that it was possible. We were told only about 10% of the people who go to Alaska, see it once. We saw it about four or five times. If you take the cruise after the land portion, you will get to see Hubbard Glacier. We would both love to go again. Another cruise is through the Panama Canal. Absolutely breathtaking!

It ended up being the last trip my parents ever took,as my mother’s health would not allow for travel after that. To have shared their last trip will be a memory i will never forget. This Sept. my husband and I will sail the Diamond Princess to Alaska and beyond and I am so looking forward to sharing everything with him that I shared with my parents 11 years ago. I’m 78 & my wife & I did the same thing in reverse, taking our two sons with one daughter-in-law & one wonderful grandson (only one we have) on a cruise to Hawaii in 2010. We had so much fun on that 14-day Princess Cruise that we’re doing it again this year with the same gang to Alaska. Like you.

I am a very good friend of Karen’s and her family. She told me about the trip she had planned for her Dad through our friend Mary Hartmann. This family has done a lot for so many people and care for their community that it is not rare for this blessing of a beautiful story be told. This is a wonderful blog to see and well deserving. Thank you princess cruise line for sharing my friends once in a life time experience. This should warm anyone’s heart and keep a strong hold in their hearts forever.

    Hi karen
Just read your story I have just returned from a south pacific cruise with my 8 yr old granddaughter and we shared a bond as you and your dad did. Its a bond that will last forever and the memories will be with us for ever. I am nearly 70 and am booking my 3rd cruise shortly. This one to New Zealand. I would love to do Alaska etc but my travelling buddies are not as adventurous as me. Hooray for Princess. Cheers

My husband surprised me with a Med Cruise for May 2009. I had been to italy once and wanted to go back, but he had no desire to go, so the compromise was a crusie where we both got what we wanted. One of the stops was Istanbul Turkey and my comment was why would you want to go there. Well I had to eat my words because it was beautiful and one of the best places I have ever been to (besides Italy). Princess is our number one choice for travel. We have been to Europe, Panama Canal, Alaska, and are now looking into Austrailia, New Zealand.

We flew to Rome a few days early & did some sightseeing there before getting on the ship @ Civitavecchia. We have booked a 12 night cruise in Australia & New Zeland for March 2013…Can’t wait. This will be my mother’s 3rd cruise & my 13th!

    Hello Karen
Wow..absolutely fantastic your story moved me to tears…what a great bond and love that you have for your folks. What about Mum? Dad’s are great but Mum’s I would walk the earth for.
I am so glad you both made that dream come true, my Wife and I wanted to take her Father George to the “Wild West”, there was not a book he had not read and a film that he had not seen he was enthralled, he was a gunslinging, whisky sipping high rolling cowboy to the core. Some how children, educations, their marriages and a tight budget had blown the dream.
He too was a World War 2 soldier “A British Grenadier Guardsman” and served on the front line in Europe and North Africa, he was a soldier all the way up to the day he sadly died. Regrets yes, we would have loved to have done what you so rightly done …well done Karen, go for it Cliff.

    Karen,

My sister and I just surpised my mom with a cruise for Mother’s Day. It was her last Christmas present to open and she was shocked. She has yet to cruise and hasn’t taken a vacation in 10 years or more and we knew we had to do this for her. My sister and I adore cruising and I can’t wait to share so many wonderful memories with her. Your story makes me smile and cry and I just loved reading about your trip of a lifetime.

We were lucky to see Denali for three days when we were there with Princess several years ago. Saw the Northern Lights as well, after a call from the lodge at 1:00 am. Also took a helicopter ride around Denali. I say “around” because helicopters can’t fly as high as Denali is. What a wonderful trip we had.

What a great story and how ironic that my sister and I are taking our 81-year old dad to Alaksa to fulfill his life-long dream. He also served in Korea! Mom’s in a nursing home now and he was frustrated that he never got to see Alaska. Well I got on the internet and booked a Princess trip for this May, including 3 days in Denali. I can’t wait for us to share the sled dog puppies, whales, and majestic mountains. Thanks for sharing!

    Dear Karen,
Congratulations for making this dream a reality that you and your Dad will remember for ever.
I know this will sound like old people’s speech, but old is when you appreciate much more the blessings received. Unfortunatelly my parents and I were never in the position to cruise together but finally as a senior, my wife, two daughters, one son in law and one boyfriend
cruised to Alaska. The following year daughter # 2 and her boyfriend were married by the Captain of the Princess Emerald during a Caribbean cruise.
I am glad that my small entire family made this happen before anyone in the group had a wheel chair or an oxygen tank.(figure of speech).
Thank God for the opportunity and this great rewards.
Thank you Princess for facilitating our lives so much and creating unforgetable memories.
Our family’s dream became a fabulous reality to be remembered for ever.
Remember “do it while you can” and always say Thank You.

I took the time out of my life and spent it with my dad, little did I know that 60 days later he would be gone. I pray that your brother will find time with him also, it does not have to be on a cruise ship, it just has to do with time. I have fished the Anchor River outside of Homer, and can tell you that there are AWESOME silver salmon and king salmon runs pretty much every year. We had been trying to put together their 50th Anniversary party/family trip for three years and in 2010 we accomplished it. Our trip was to the Baltic on the Star Princess. Our parents knew they were going but they only knew half of who was going with them. The TGI Fridays in the Atlanta airport will never be the same. Our parents were speechless when the other half of the family arrived, making our group 9. My mother will tell you that she cried happy tears all the way to Copenhagen. These memories will go down in our family history. Princess is one of a kind!

My husband Ralph turns 80 years young tomorrow. 3 years ago we celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary in Alaska. Princess gave us a suite in hotel in Alaska. No extra charge. This was a flying, bus, railway, & 7 day inland passage cruise. This year we will celebrate our 58th wedding anniversary. Princess is a great way to travel. We have taken 3 or 4 cruises with Princess. Now we are looking at New England Cruise.

Karen, I am so happy that you had that opportunity to go to Alaska with just your father. I, too, have had that opportunity. When I was 55 and my dad was 75, I surprised him with a cruise for just the two of us. He was reluctant to go at first, but within the first two hours on board, he was hooked. The memories we made are incredibly valuable to me. Since then, we have gone to Alaska together, along with our families, on the Diamond Princess, and enjoyed some of the same excursions as you and your father. Next week, Daddy and his wife will cruise to Tahiti. (I’m really sad I didn’t get to go on that one with them!)

anyways, for people w/ a tight budget, wait until the princess’ cruises are on sale. this usually happens when the departure are getting closer & they want to fill up the staterooms when they don’t have enough passengers booked on a particular destinations. this particularly works for people w/ a flexible work time.

Last May/June my husband and I took a13-day Alaskan cruisetour with Princess and will never forget one moment of that fabulous trip. Alaska is a country unto itself – untamed, beautiful, awesome….. someone had recommended to us that we do the land portion of the trip first so we could “rest” on the cruise portion of the trip. We took that advice and were glad that we did. We loved staying in the Princess Denali and McKinley lodges, and the train rides were wonderful! This was for sure the trip of a lifetime for us!

Including ones on her 89, 90, 93, 94, and 95th. birthdays, but we never made it to Alaska. We did Southeast Asia, the Panama Canal and the Caribbean many times. How nice to read your post. My mother and I are going on the Princess Diamond to Southeast Asia in late March for her 83rd birthday. Although she has traveled extensively since retiring almost 20 years ago (including a 19-person riverboat cruise down the Amazon two years ago), she is concerned that she will be the oldest and therefore most feeble person on this cruise. If your mother is any indication, it sounds like mine will fit in just fine. I hope you are able to enjoy the upcoming cruise without your traveling companion. My sympathy to you.

My Dad also had a lifetime dream to travel to Alaska. He had some health issues. About 4 months prior to leaving on the cruise, Dad had to have surgery. One of the things we believe aided in his recovery, was this trip he was so looking forward to. When we embarked on this trip, Dad was 90 years old! He was determined to go and had a wonderful Alaskan cruise ex perience on the Sapphire Princess. He was treated like a king by the staff which truly made him feel special. There was a family group of 12 – which also added to the wonderful memories made. Your story of your Dad made me think so much of the great trip we had in making my Dad’s travel dream come true.

Hi Karen! Reading your story w/ your dad & people’s comments made me cry all the way down until I read Rich negative comments. It made me smile a little bit because he is right in some way.

You are a wonderful person & I hope there are many like you. Your African trip was meant to not work because Alaska was meant to be for you & your dad. Things happen for a reason & your story moved us. Thank you for sharing!

My family had been to other countries, & recently after many years we again had the time & money to go on a trip as a whole family in the Philippines for 6 week together. This includes my mom & her partner, my sis & her family or 5, & yours truly. I am glad we went for a 6 week holiday in the Philippines. We did had fun visiting many places & spending/bonding time together w/ our relatives & friends as well. My mom (72 y.o.) postponed her eye surgery & will wait until we get back in Canada. She is scared that her eye surgery might not be successful. Heaven forbids! It may never be an Alaska trip but the most important part is that we are spending time bonding together & those memories will last a lifetime.

Alaska would be one of the cruises we would love to go in the near future. It is just cold to go especially because we already live in the northern part of Alberta :-) Another snow to see? May be….. That is why we always go to warmer places.

We lived in Edmonton for two years. You won’t see snow on the ground in Alaska. It is cold when you’re at the Glaciers, but that is usually only a half day. I would say it was much like an early summer in Edmonton. I have always gone (5 times so far) in late May, early June. We now live in Phoenix, Arizona and I found it cool. Wear long sleeves, a sweatshirt and sometimes a jacket when you’re out on the water in a smaller boat. I have been on many cruises. If someone asks me what I would suggest for a first cruise, I always say Alaska.

    Hi Karen,
Thank you for your beautiful story.!!!! I hope you share Alaska with both your mom and dad someday. It is my favorite place on earth!! They call it “God’s Winter Heaven”. I have cruised to Alaska 27 times from S.F., Whittier, Vancouver, Seattle, or Seward. One year, it was 80% in Juneau!!! On a back to back cruise( two cruises together) from Vancouver to Whittier and then back, we experienced Hawaii like weather the whole week. The next week on the return, it was Alaska weather, brisk, drizzily, cloudy. You never know when the weather will be cold or warm.To those who are thinking of a cruise to Alaska, dress layered and enjoy one of the most beautiful sceneries and sea life on earth. It changes all the time
After 68 cruises, 51 on Princess, we will be sailing again in April on the Star. I love meeting people from all over the world, not having to repack each day as we visit the various destinations. This is in addition to great food, entertainment, cabin cleaned and cared for. Not a care in the world. Do what you want, when you want!!!!. It is always a new adventure. For me, cruising is the only way to go.
    Bon Voyage, again, Karen!!!!!!

My husband and I are going in September on an Alaskan cruise. We will be celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary. We went to Alaska on our honeymoon but not on a cruise. We will be traveling on the Island Princess. This will be our third cruise on Princess. We went on a Baltic cruise in May 2011. We really enjoy traveling on Princess.

Residing in every parents mind (father or mother) is the joy of seeing their children grow and enjoy life with their respective families, friends and neighbors. A parents gift of life is eternal and truly delivered without expectations. That is why your being responsible for a checkmark on your Dad’s bucket list brought a tear to his eye, as it did to me. Your parents always only what the best for you, and you’ve demonstrated that you too only want the best for him. My you be blessed with knowledge of the significance of your good deed.

My wife, sister and I are taking my dad on his bucket list trip to New Zealand next month. Since neither my sister nor my dad have been on a cruise, it will be like watching your kids at Disneyland for the first time. I am hopeful that he (and my sister) truly enjoy the “cruising experience”. And, since we are on Princess, I am pretty sure they will!!!

I hope you post another trip report for next year. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one.

I have only done the 7 day cruise (1 time) and parks (6 times in 6 years). I would do nohtnig less than a 5 day cruise and nohtnig less than 5 park days. I thought the 7 day cruise was great, but would have missed so much with less days. Also, we did Disney once with 5 1/2 park days and missed so very much. I recommend 2 separate vacations or one large vacation with cruise first.

hi, karen. very nice of you, your dad really will enjoy this. may is usually slightly wet so take some light rain gear, and for warmth take a heavy sweater, and light jacket or two. we have made 8 cruises to alaska and enjoyed every one as though it was our first. when you get to anchorage, try to go to the sourdough mining rest, it is worth the tripp. if you do this tripp again, do it during the latter half of july, august and the first half of sept, the weather is absalutely fine, often in the low eighties, and very little rain. hope your father enjoy’s his tripp.

As we travel & time moves on, we realize that the most important time we have is with family traveling to places that connect us all together. I only wish I could travel with my parents again, but for the time that we did, those will always be priceless times. Plan another trip with both your parents, the memories will be forever.

Karen, great story. It reminds me of my Alaska story with my mom:

While young adults, my three sisters and I were busy with college, marriage, raising kids, etc. and our parents were busy traveling the world. Amoung their travels, our parents made it to all the U.S. states except Alaska. It was on their “Bucket List” but dad passed away before they made it. Mom talked about still wanting to go to see the state but also to be able to say she made it to all 50 states. To help her with this endeavor, my sisters and I booked a cruise to Alaska on Princess for the five of us. We flew into Anchorage and disembarked in Vancouver.

She had never cruised before. She loved it and still can’t stop talking about it 3 years later. We all had a great time. We have some great photos of the five of us as well as the amazing scenery, and of course lots of wonderful memories. Now mom looks forward to cruising again.

I too talked about it so much that my husband booked the same cruise for our family of four the next year. What a great experience for the kids, they both loved it! My husband likes to cruise, but generally likes to explore different destinations. He enjoyed Alaska so much that he says he’d do the Alaska cruise again in a heart beat.

Went on Princess to Alaska for our 30th anniversary. Hubby surprised me by purchasing the renewal of vows by the Capt. package. Very nice with champagne, flowers, and photos. Also, my maid of Honor and her hubby went along with us! It was a very nice break and revival of our long marriage, which had some challenging moments the previous year. Scenery was very pretty, but we prefer other destinations all in all because they offer more activity. Watching the pretty scenery is nice, but we prefer to explore cities, go dancing, visit museums and markets. this is for the person who loves to be in woods with wildlife.

Karen, your wonderful story of the special Alaska Dream Trip with your Dad brought tears to my eyes. My wife and I tried to get my Dad to take roughly the same Alaska Cruise/Tour with us in 2009. He’s 95, still active and independent, but thought this dream trip would be too much trouble for us, so he turned us down. I guess the Alaska cruise with Dad will never happen; we have to find simpler, closer to home ways to create special memories. By the way, Jan and I did go ahead with the Princess Cruise. We were on the Sapphire Princess. We did a lot of the same tours and excursions you enjoyed. We’re ready for another. From neighbors just up the road in Genoa, IL…

Just read your story and it made me think about my upcoming trip to Alaska with my father. Actually, he is my stepfather, my real father passed away 35 yrs. ago, who was hesitant at first, stating that he was an outsider. My mother passed away 3-1/2 yrs. ago. Anyway, I remember talking about the possibility of going on this trip the latter part of June 2011. We finally got it altogether (8 other people are joining us) and booked our trip in July 2011 for September 2012. My father and I speak at least 2 or 3 times a week and invariably we touch on the subject about our upcoming trip. He is elated that he decided to join our group. And I know without a shadow of a doubt, it wil be the best cruise ever. (I say that about every cruise, this will be my third, but each trip gets better than the last!) The only regret I have is why we didn’t do this earlier in life when we were so much younger.

We even went on a small 4 seater sea plane. I cannot explain the wonders we saw from up there, My friend never thought she would have the courage to go up in one, but still say’s she would not have missed it for the world. We decided to introduce our two sons and their wives to our great state of Alaska, and what better way than a Princess Cruise. August of 2011 was our 3rd visit there. We had a wonderful time, and since we were celebrating our 67th anniversary, we were the butt of many jokes, some by our talented Cruise Director. We look forward to our next Princess Cruise in 2012. …… PS, our sons are paying for these Cruises, …….they just don’t know it yet.

I am planning an Alaskan cruise with my grandmother. I think that this will be a great experience. The last time my grandmother was on a cruise she was really young and on the P&O ship Aurora (i believe) and was not too fond of it. Alaska is not to be missed!!! You have nuomreus options to cruise and tour Alaska. You can Cruise only or combine with a land and sea package depending on how much time you have. There are a ton of companies going to Alaska; some good and some better. I would recommend a combined Cruise/Tour. You came all the way North to Alaska, you might as well see it! Plan anywhere from 12 to 14 days for a package deal. Cruise only will take a week. Check the listed web sites for ideas to start.
